    RHP question

So the other night i took my dums out to show a friend. she is on the bottom tank and was hiding in her hot hide. so i had to move the log that the t stat probe was glued to and forgot to move it back. my fault and i woke up in the morning and ambient temp was reading 87* so i know the hot spot had to be close to 100 if not over.
so i took the t stat probe off the log and taped a piece of wire to it so it stiffened up the wire. not on the probe just the wire. and pulled it threw the side of my tank. so now the t stat probe is suspended basicly sticking out the side of the tank about 6 inches off the wall. the whole probe is under the RHP but only on the one side. it used to sit in the middle of the RHP.
here is the thing now. my ambients are around 79-81 instead of a constant 80. my hot spot on the top tank for my bcc is reading 94 with the t stat set at 84 and my bottom tank is reading the same thing.
Are RHP hotter on the middle then the sides? i am planning on putting substate back in the tanks in 2 weeks so it shuld keep the hot spot a hair cooler than the pvc tank bottom i am thinking.

    Re: RHP question

Without pics its tough to tell how you have it set up, but here is what I do. I have the thermostat probe poked through the back of the tank, like if you stuck your finger through...centered side to side with the RHP, about 6" off the floor. Thermostat set at 83 gives me hot spot of around 90 and ambients of around 80ish. Substrate will impact ambients. Directly under RHP will be hottest spot. Just temp gun hot spot to fine tune thermostat sweet spot.

    RHP question

Yes picture the heat from a rhp as light, imagine the panel as a single light panel. The heat spreads and extends from the panel dropping in temp as it warms a larger area. The probe based on an over year long test should be directly under the center and positioned so the snake cannot stay between probe and rhp. They do not hear air the objects only. The objects they have heated in turn heat air. The mass and surface (glossy or matte) and colour (light or dark) effect how hot they become and how much they will raise ambient temps.

so with larger snakes (mine are not there yet) and nothing in the tank other than substrate how are you guys placing the t stat probe? i do not want to place it under the substrate because then the snake can lay over it and also i will be using reptibark ~2 inches thick.

    RHP question

My t stat probs for rack and tank is placed between the heat source and the cage. So for rack it's placed on the middle tubs second row of heat tape then the tub is above that same for my tank. Sorry I just realized your talking about a RHP my mistake my info is useless too you

I glue mine into a cable strap then glue that to the frame of the rhp.
