Of course you could do a combo, whatever suited you and your setup. I didn't mean pulling the plants out of the dirt, though. My live plants are still in their pots, so I can pull them out to find hiding crickets, rinse the leaves, etc., because that makes it easy. I have heard of people having grass as a substrate, and I think it's a nice idea, but I'd really like to be able to have moss. Why can't you buy moss spores at the garden shop? Moss would do better with less light and would be easier to find crickets in, but either one would happily use the nutrients from the p00.

By the way, in response to your question elsewhere about a waterfall, you could just run it off a cheap lamp timer and maintain a good humidity cycle very easily. Or you could spring for a more expensive timer and run the waterfall and a black or red light off it for night-time viewing.

Oohhhhh, that's a neat idea! A blacklight would be very cool! Would have to be careful about how much it heated the enclosure though.

Yep, you wouldn't want it big and centered. I'd get a lower-wattage bulb and put it off-center. I have a higher-wattage bulb off-center for my screened cage (easy heat dispersion), and they often hang out under it.

What about Tokays? They are really nice display animals......but you can't handle them obviously. ALthough I have seen and held tame ones before.
