Exclamation Would my ball python eat my guinea pig?

I am getting a young ball python soon, and I already have a guinea pig. My guinea pig is only a few months old so she's about half the size she will be when full grown. However the ball python was just born in the end of last year and I'm just worried if she happens to escape her enclosure would she eat my guinea pig? I would keep them in separate rooms but I'm in an apartment and I have to keep them in my bedroom. The guinea pig is much bigger than the rat pups that the python is currently eating, but would she still try to kill the guinea pig even if she cant eat it?

Just don't have them both out at the same time and make sure their enclosures are escape proof.

Yeah don't test the waters, and make sure you wash your hands after you handle the ole guinea pig

While it is theoretically possible your ball might attack and injure or kill your guinea pig if he/she came across it, there are a lot of maybes in the equation.

IF your ball python can escape it's enclosure. IF the ball pythons escaped while hungry and went looking for food. IF the hungry, escaped ball python happened to go unnoticed for an extended period of time to allow it time to hunt down the guinea pig enclosure. IF the hungry, escaped, unnoticed ball python could then figure out how to get into the guinea pig enclosure, THEN it might be a problem.

So, to simplify your life, make the ball pythons enclosure hard to escape from. Feed the ball python regularly, get in the habit of peeking in on the ball python regularly, and finally make sure the guinea pig enclosure is as snake proof as you can, and don't worry about it too much.

Re: Would my ball python eat my guinea pig?

The ball python will not be able to kill the guinea pig. Naturally, no, do not have them out together, but the ball python will pretty much leave the guinea pig alone even if it does get out. I used to keep guinea pigs and bunnies before I had my chinchillas, and I have had ball pythons that escaped and got into the mammals' cages. I heard the mammals making a ruckus well before there were any issues, and honestly I was more worried about what the guinea pig or bunny would do to the snake than what the snake was going to do to them. My chinchillas get MAD if there are any reptiles out and about near them, so their alarm calls alert me before the snakes ever get near.

I always worry more about what would happen if the mammals got ahold of the snakes - they are larger and their teeth are sharp, and they'd injure or kill the snake just to remove a threat. A snake isn't going to attempt to kill something just because, they'll strike to defend themselves but they're not going to kill unless they plan on eating. For this reason, your snake has more to fear from the guinea pig than the guinea pig has to fear from the snake.

Not to ruffle feathers here, but I'm pretty sure a bp is fully capable of killing a guinea pig if it wanted to. Just because it didn't happen to when it got out in your situation doesn't mean that kind of thing will always have such a happy ending.
Edit- especially seeing the op's pig is far from full grown.
