Since the Frontline has already been applied, there's nothing you can put on him to kill the ticks, even if it's a different chemical. The FL should kill the ticks, but even when they die, lots of times they stay attached. Manual removal is pretty much all you can do at this point.

How long ago was the Frontline applied? It can take up to 48 hours for it to kill the ticks. If he had a bath 24 hours either before or after it was applied, or a harsh shampoo was used within a couple days of applying, it might have not absorbed fully before being washed off, hence the not working.

I work at a vet's clinic so I've had to call them with questions about the FL, so this info is straight from them, by the way.

If u do remove them by hand.. Don't burn or squeeze them.. It causes them to regurge into the dog.. If the dog will sit still u can pry them off gently with a pocket knife slowly. Or comb them off and pull the pinchers out with tweezers

Are you seeing that resistance with ticks also? We have definitely seen it with fleas this year, it's next to useless! We're switching people over to Comfortis or Advantage Multi for the most part, with a tick collar if they live in the country or hike a lot. We don't seem to have a very heavy tick problem here, so we haven't noticed a difference with them and FL.

    Re: Ticks! Help!

He was given an oral frontline. Not topical. So I dont know how long it will take it to be effective. I called my vet and a groomer and they recommended adams plus flea and tick. So I am gonna try that along with manually removing them. I hope this works!

There's no such thing as oral Frontline, and as far as I know, no oral meds that will do ticks. He was probably given Capstar, which only kills fleas for 24 hours. It's cheap and doesn't need a prescription, so lots of shelters use it to control fleas.

You can try Adams, not sure how well it will do on ticks. Avoid Hartz, it's one of the most useless things out there. Most OTC products are not very effective, but you can always try.
