    ENCLOSURE SIZE question?

Ok ok..lol I'm new to this..My enclosure is 24x24x14 and I never knew what type of snake i was getting and when I went to the expo today..i got a 53-54g Yellow Belly female lol So I emailed the breeder and showed him the pic. he said this: LOL that cage is overkill. Its an awesome looking setup but quite large for such a young ball. It would be good for when she is about 300 grams or so but really you should keep her in something small. Too much space will make her feel insecure as a baby and she wont really be able to locate her food easily.<-------------so being that this is all i have...what should i do? add more hides? This snake is only eating live feeders and of course I have to wait a couple of days until she settles and then try to feed her. Suggestions? This is all trial and error! lol

Add clutter. Fake plants, crumpled newspaper, etc.

Or if you can, just get her a small Rubbermaid to keep her in until she's bigger.

Crumpled up newspaper is my suggestion, because fake plants at pet stores are expensive and you'll need like 10+ of them to really clutter it up. Don't be surprised if she's slow to eat because the cage is way too big for her IMO (ie I agree with the breeder).

    Re: ENCLOSURE SIZE question?

Couple fake trees and/or skulls from petsmart. Also check out Hobby Lobby for some fake garland that you can cut apart and make trees and vines with. All these things make dark shadows, crevices, and keep the animal from feeling exposed. here's an example of my 20 gallon long that contains my hatchling blood python. You can use a large enclosure. You just have to make the extra effort to make your animal feel secure to roam.

The biggest thing that you need to do is get smaller hides. The ones you have are way too big. I would recommend the Reptile basics small size hides.

Dollar store has always been an easy way for me to clutter up enclosures with fake plants, or using a coupon at one of the craft stores. Pet stores have some cool stuff, but I tend to avoid them because the same $1 plant I'd get at the craft store gets bumped up to $5-$8
