I went to my friend's pet store a few days ago. She is being overrun by feeder rats; not selling them as fast as they're breeding. She had two pregnant females that she wanted to unload, and gave them to me for free. They were in a pretty crowded cage, which is why I think that neither of them gave birth. The night I got them home, the first female had 11 babies! That was about a week ago, and all are doing great. I plan on putting most of them down when they're the right size to get my BCI started on them, which should be in about a month. Yay for freebies!!

Wow, that's great! If I ever start breeding my own feeders, it'll probably be rats. But I do fear getting a bit attached to them! I'm sure there would be some that would never see a snake!

Ginevive, when your bci starts eating small rats, the growth is unheard of. i can notice visible growth in my bci after feeding small rats for only a few weeks. no doubt, bci's rule.

I don't know if that should be something to look forward to, or fear, lol. I would try feeding him a rat pinkie, but I'd rather wait til they gain a bit more size to them. If he takes to rats like he takes f/t mice, I'll love it!

Count on it, Judy. The two mice we kept that were supposed to be feeders before we switched to f/t just had babies a couple weeks ago. My plan was to freeze the little guys once they got to be fuzzies or hoppers, but the darn things are SO cute, I just can't bring myself to do it!

LOL! Wait 'til they start stinking up the house....then they might be a little easier to freeze.
Seriously...I ended up with a pair of live mice that the snake wouldn't eat and I had to make myself take them back to the petstore before I went and got attached to them! I don't think I'd have too much trouble euthanizing the young ones, but I'm sure I would grow attached to the breeders. Whatever type of critter it was. (Mice, rats, gerbils, etc)

LOL Smynx! That's why when we used to breed mice and the girls were little and wanted to name them, we called them names like Burrito, Ham Salad, Spongecake, etc.

Good idea! We have 6, so how about Extra Value Meal #1, Extra Value Meal #2, etc., etc.?

There ya go! Or each of you gets to name one but it has to be a food item, and the one left over is the first one fed off!
