local news cops capture a ball python on bridge
http://www.wboc.com/story/19864500/e...capture-python the link for the artical will see if i can copy and paste it.
EASTON, Md.- Easton police say two officers captured a ball python after it was spotted sunbathing on the bridge along the Rails to Trails path earlier this week.
Shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, officers received a report about a "boa constrictor" having been seen on the bridge. When officers arrived on the scene, they did not see the snake. Of the officers that responded, police said only a few were "eager enough (and willing)" to crawl close along the bridge to look in areas where the snake could be hiding.
Officers eventually located the snake in a partially hollowed portion of the bridge. Police said Lt. Mark Hrobar and Pfc. Lenox Trams were able to corral the snake into a metal trash can.
The snake was later properly identified as a ball python and estimated to be approximately 5-6 years of age. The snake was about 4 feet in length.
A local veterinarian, Chad Hutchison of Community Animal Hospital in Easton, agreed to take and provide care for the snake. He has prior experiencing with caring for reptiles, police noted.
Police suspect that the snake either escaped or was released by a former owner. Hrobar noted that the snake was cold and suspected it would not have survived much longer in the wild.
this sickens me when I willing to drive up to 2 hours and pick up unwanted snakes.

Re: local news cops capture a ball python on bridge
Did the officer determine that the ectothermic monster snake was "cold" before or after he had to "corral" all four feet of it with a metal trashcan? People never cease to amaze me. I'm glad it seems to be going to someone who knows something about proper care.

I'm honestly surprised they properly identified the snake. Definitely glad they found it before it died.

That BP is lucky that the people who spotted it knew enough about the indigenous snakes to know that this was not one of them, and called the authorities...

If releasing a few here and there is grounds for banning ownership then all cat ownership needs to be banned and we need to begin programs the world over to eradicate Felis catus, as they are an invasive species anywhere that they exist in the wild. They wreak havoc on native ecosystems, eating small rodents and birds as well as lizards and small snakes. They don't care if a species is threatened or in need of conservation, they just eat whatever they can catch. Hell, they even kill small rodents just to play with them and don't end up eating them from time to time. At least a Burmese python in the Everglades will eat what it kills.
Why the tangent? Because your post essentially said that releasing a pet is grounds for proposing legislation to ban a certain species from being kept as a pet. It is thinking like that, among other things, that has lead to so much legislation being proposed in the recent past. At least most snakes that are kept as pets in the U.S. will die during the winter if they are released in a majority of the U.S. Cats, however, thirve in the wild in every state in the U.S. to include HI and AK.
Sorry for rambling, and I'm glad that the snake has found a good home.
