I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this but here goes
I have always loved indigo snakes but I have noticed the few people who do sell them say u r required to have a permit to purchase and keep and I was wondering what is that about and why??
If anyone can give me any info on this it would be great

names
Indigo snakes, Drymarchon corais couperi, are listed as a threatened species, mainly because of habitat destruction. Their possession is regulated at both the state and federal levels.

Jotay, if you can find some reputable breeders of indigos, I'm sure they'd be happy to answer all your questions about state and federal regulations. A dishonest breeder (and let's face it folks, they are out there too, just like dishonest pet-store operators) will simply tell you whatever makes it easiest to get the sale. "Permit? You don' need no stinkin' permit!"

yeah, that is a state by state issue as well. As of 1996 georgia, florida, and alabama had it listed as federally and state threatened. Mississippi, and and South Carolina had it listed just state threatened. And texas has federally listed it as threatened and has banned commercial breeding.

you can get permits from your states Department Of Wildlife. Research it online and you can find out yourself.

Aww.....The Indigo, I remember them well. Just because this was about owning a Indigo, I decided to post this pic of an Indigo that we owned and my little brother and sister. Pic was probably taken around 1972/3. Im not sure which Indigo this was, we had two, but it is either the 6 1/2 footer or the 7 footer. They were both very docile. I may just have to check out the permit thing and get me another Indigo.
In FLorida, the Indigo was put on the Threatend list in 1978.
