    Well, after some more searching, and it helped to know WHAT to search for, it is indeed a brown/dekay's snake. To be specific, I think it's a Northern Brown snake. An adult, from the description.

    Judging from the information I found, it was most likely feeding on the slugs I found in the garden.

    I am unsure about keeping it. He/she is cute as can be, but I don't know about legality and I'd have to really research care.

    I'd put him back in the garden, he can be your natural plant guard against those pesky slugs.
