CHESWOLD, Del. (AP) - Wildlife officials say a nearly 4-foot alligator has been found in a retention pond near Cheswold.

The mud-covered creature was spotted Thursday by a resident and recovered by officials. It will be transferred to an alligator rescue facility in Maryland.

Sgt. Gregory Rhodes of the state's Fish and Wildlife Enforcement said that the reptile was probably in the pond all winter. He says because of the mild weather, the alligator probably hunkered down in the mud to stay warm and hibernate.

The reptile was probably a pet that was released or escaped to the wild.

Officials remind residents that owning alligators is illegal in Delaware.

(this was cut and pasted from local news web site since the story would not link or stay up readable for more than a few days. (WBOC news locally ) )
