    Opinions on 2 topics needed

Ok so me and a buddy have been argueing all day about these two topics and I think he is wrong
    First topic
    Quarantine:
I say quarantine should last atleast 60day but preferably 3-6 months to be absolutely safe
    He says 1 week-1 month

    Second topic
    Dinker babies imported from Africa
I say the chances to find a new morph is low maybe 1out of 400-500 babies
He says high 1 out of 10-15 babies

So what do y'all think on these topics

My quarantine is minimum 90 days. If I do not know the seller that well, even longer. You can do whatever you like but even at 90 days, I'm taking some risk.

I have no data on the dinker question. My guess would be closer to yours than his. Though, you do not state whether it includes all imports or just ones with something that could be considered different, thus a dinker.

Ok if finding a new morph in imported babies were possibly that high we would have a huge list of new morphs being produced a bigger list than there is now because a lot of people have imported snakes before. Thats just my opinion though

It's completely opinion, point of quarantine is to make sure underlying issues that are contagious don't spread to the rest of your collection. How long you want to wait is up to you. I personally go 3 months.

I think your both silly for trying to put a number on it..... it not even something that can be argued, your both pulling statistics from thin air.

In response to the quarantine topic, I believe quarantine is necessary for any new snake you bring home to your established collection no matter who it's from. If you had it shipped to you, it will probably be stressed which can weaken it's immune system which can cause it to get sick... If you buy from a reputable breeder at an expo or a show, there is a chance that someone who has handled that snake has handled another reptile and did not properly sanitize their hands, potentially passing on an airborne disease or virus which can make your snake sick!

side note: SANITIZE YOUR HANDS WELL AFTER YOU HANDLE OR TOUCH ANY REPTILE AT AN EXPO

So no matter where or who you buy your snakes from, quarantine is one of the essential steps of buying a new reptile.

The amount of time you want to quarantine is up to the individual lol. There's no standard unless you work at a zoo . I will probably keep my new pickups away from my established collection for 2 months.. So far it has only been 1 month, and it really isn't bothering me lol. I have 2 sets of tongs, I wash in 2 different sinks, and I of course I work on my established collection first ^_^. However, I heat up their rodents in the same place lol. So far so good, but like what I've read elsewhere, ball pythons do everything slowly . So we'll see. The more strict the quarantine, and the longer you hold to it, the better the chances are that your new snakes will fit in quite well ! Then PICTURE TIME haha

As far as the morphs in imports topic goes, I have no idea LOL. I don't know anyone personally who imports them. There are some users here who import who could probably better explain how that goes lolol.

I would think a dinker could be anything of interest that you would want to reproduce. Keep in mind that we are speaking of genetics and they can so some crazy stuff if you find two that match.

It's a fun argument not something to take serious but u think that it's not more than 1 out of ten? As addict says there would be more morphs if it was that low

Well, of course you think he's wrong, or you wouldn't be arguing with him about it.

I think QT is purely a matter of personal choice and there is not a definitive "right" or "wrong" across the board. The shorter the QT, the greater the risk of cross-contamination. But how much risk we each choose to accept is an individual choice. And how much risk is actually involved is not something that I've ever seen quantitatively proven out. Even with 90 days...or 120 days...or longer...there is no guarantee there isn't something lurking dormant and just waiting for a chance to run rampant through your collection. But that is a risk we all choose to take when we bring new animals into our homes.

On the whole "dinker" subject...I don't think there's any way to tell, and I don't think the parameters of the debate have been established well enough to have any sort of position in the first place.

-- Are we talking unusual looking animals that MIGHT prove genetic?
-- Are we talking animals that have already proven genetic?
-- Are we talking neat looking balls that may work well in a selective breeding project?
-- Are we talking about the ratio of animals that any joe-blow can get their hands on in the African import lots?
-- Are we talking about the ratios of "dinkers" to "normals" in the lots BEFORE they're picked over by the specialists and the big name breeders with their inside contacts?

The "dinker" issue seems like a rather unproductive topic from the get-go. At least with a QT argument, you might convince someone it's safer to isolate animals for a longer period of time.
