I have to agree with you there!
To pick up difficult snakes, I simply place a hand towel over the snake. Then simply lift it up. Once they are out, they generally calm down, or at least are easier to avoid if they try to bite!
If he can't see or detect your hand coming at him, he will probably not bite you. You can't be afraid to put your hand into his cage, although by getting bitten, you are really just learnig to be afraid in a way, I guess. The towel method should be helpful.

I do not handle or feed my snakes when they are in shed. It's a stressful time for the little boogers.
