    Question Brindle Rats ???

Are there brindle coats on rats? Anyone have any? Photos?

I get a lot of brindle in mice but never saw it with rats.

    Thanks.

I'm pretty sure there isn't. There's something called tortoise shell, or calico, but it's not brindle.

What causes brindle in mice or what's missing in rat genes? Maybe we can experiment.

I've never seen brindle in rats, but I have oodles of brindle mice. I've got one right now that has classic bulldog markings--brindle body with a mostly white head.

I'm not 100% sure how it's inherited, but the brindling seems to be dominant in the mice I have. I'm getting brindle babies out of one brindle male from all colors of mice, even the wild type brown agouti females.

Brindle mice are Avy/* . Brindle is dominant.

There is also Sex linked brindle in mice, but you will probably never see it outside of the show ring. Sex linked brindle males are all BEW, have kinky whiskers, and die before weaning. The females are beautifully striped in most any colour that a mouse can come in (instead of Avy/* brindle where most are black and red/orange). Homozygous sex linked brindle is also lethal. Sex linked brindle is Mobr/*

Here's a photo of some pink eyed red (Ay/* p/p Mobr/*) sex linked brindle mice:

There are in fact at least 5 brindle genes in mice. Another is called 'Wavy tiger' and is similar to Mobr/* but the surviving sex is striped and has a wavy coat.

I have no idea which brindle he is, but this is Harvey, with three of his brindled get. They've ranged from light peach and grey colors to almost black that you can barely see the brindle.

That is an Avy/* brindle, also called 'American Brindle' because it is not available in the UK.

The white markings are caused by the piebald gene s/s , and is recessive.

I did a google search awhile ago while researching colors and didn't find any brindle rats but did find some interesting looking ones that were described at merles. Check out google, there are some real good looking merle rats!

Merle in rats is reeeally under developed. They are patchy, and spotty, and for the most part no good for showing.

Look up merle mice, and merle dogs to get a real look at merle.
