Rat temp?
This is something I never thought about till I got my laser thermometer(I have been checking temps of everything since I got it today, dogs nose, tv screen ect..) Well I feed my snakes frozen thawed and have never really had a problem with them takeing it at room temp, sometimes I put it under the lamp but dont always have to. That being said, if I really wanted to be precise what is the average temp of a live rat and should I heat the rat to that temp for a quick feed?

The rat should be about as warm as you are. Your body temp should be about 98 +/- and the rat should be about as warm as your skin which might be a bit cooler than your core body temp. 98-100 would be good. If you are unsure, use your laser themometer and test your skin under your arm or chin and match the rat to about that temp.

Re: Rat temp?
Thanks for the info, never thought that it would be that high of a temp. As a side note what kind of average temp should I see when I scan my snakes? Again this something I never thought of till I got my laser gun!

I had been thinking a non-contact thermometer was over-kill, but then I found myself running to Harbor Freight the second week of owning my BP to get one. Nothing like being able to measure the substrate temp across the whole floor.

The temp gun made f/t SO much easier...we had been making the rats too cold and they were cooling off too quickly! Having a temp gun made us realize "Oh, woops, the rat is only about 88 right now" and then as soon as we heated the rat up to the right temp, BAM, the snake took it down!

Most of my balls are usually in the 86-88.f range. When I had to do soaks for a rescue, my vet had told me to do the water at 88.f bc that's the temp they normally like to stay at. Whether that's exact or not idk. But I always to soak temp at 88.f.
