They get calmer than you might expect given their generally sour reputation. Most of that is based off of encounters with wild snappers. In captivity they can be quite calm but the spatial requirements should still deter most people from keeping them.

I've had my common for two years now, and he was about the size of yours when I got him. He's currently in a 180 wide aquarium, and I'm planning on saving up for a 400 when I get a house.

They are great pets, but are not beginner at all. Definitely the most work, and most expenses of all my pets. Though I swear, I plan on having a snapper the rest of my days.

Right now, my biggest problem is with filtration. My filters crapped out, and I'm having problems getting them back up and running, so Dredge doesn't have much water to swin around in until I can afford new ones, or repair the current ones.

Anywho, back on topic. Sweet snapper! I do't care what anyone says, but baby snappers are the cutest. Ever. Then they get big, and are less cute, but more awesome.

I'll post some updated pics soon. He has pretty much doubled in size in the two short months I have had him.

Congrats! I was looking at one today for $4500

I use to catch them A LOT when I was a kid and had several WC as pets for a while. They seem to live everywhere and that sharp bite is signature. I do want another, but I will never get over the smell of their poo

The smell isn't that bad. However, foul water can be pretty disgusting. You better make sure you don't run into filtration issues.

Bet you can't wait until he's as big as the one in my avatar.

Biggest snapper I've laid eyes or hands on! Also, super chill and handle-able, not at all typical for a wild animal who's been grabbed.

Keep us updated with pics please, I have to live vicariously through other snapper keepers for now.

Right now I have him in a 75 gallon tank that is only filled 1/3 of the way and I have a Rena XP3 filtering it. The Rena turns over 350 gallons per hour and the volume of the tank is only roughly 25-30 gallons....so my water is crystal clear and odor-free.
