incubator without power - questions Shou

Incubator has been without power since 6pm Saturday. Temp has gone down to 76. I candled the eggs and miraculously the eggs with 3weeks to go all have good veins and movement. The eggs with 4 days to go have veins but candling them was not easy and I saw movement in one egg. With temps as they are what would be.the best couse of action for the eggs due in four days? Should I cut them and see how they are doing? Or leave them be. Incubating temp before power outage was 87.5-89.

I just had the same experience myself from Hurricane Irene. Not only did I candle the eggs to check them, but also brought the temp back up slowly with a candle while I waited for power to be restored. Best of luck with the clutch!

Why would you open the incubator if you are without power? I would try to leave it closed to help maintain temperature.

Heat packs can be made to work. The best solution is obviously a small generator and some Ranco Thermostats. Most the proportional don't like small generators, but it works fine for the ranco.

At 76 degrees in the incubator I have to ask what temperature your actual pet snakes are at? I would be more worried about keeping the animals I have healthy then the eggs I am counting before they hatch.

I would either get a power converter for my car and run the incubator off that for an hour, two or three times a day. Or buy a generator. As far as cutting them, I wouldn't cut unless I knew for sure I was able to maintain proper temps. I think (without any kind of proof) that eggs have some built in protection maybe not alot but liquid does take longer to cool down then air does. just my opinion on that, good luck though I really hope out works out for you

The air in the incubator and the air in the room were the same. Opening the incubator didn't matter. We do not have a generator or the money to.buy one.

The snakes are also around the same temperature. Temperature in the apartment has been varying from 75-80. I've been checking oseveral times a day. I was very unprepared for this storm. Once I get my first paycheck from my new job im getting tons of heatpacks.

Hopefully we'll be getting our power back today. Everyone else we know has their power now.

Don't cut. The lower temps will have slowed down development, so you'll cut too soon...

EDIT: I mean, don't cut yet. I'm not sure how many extra days to wait at 76F, but definitely at least the 4 days until they were due.

If you see them visibly going bad, okay, then cut.

They are due Thursday. The other clutch is due in roughly 18 days. The first clutch, when I candled yesterday, one of the eggs had good veins but tje inside color was yellow. Im hoping they are okay.

Im crossing my fingers that I have power when I get home today. Here is another question. When the power does come back on, will the warm up of the incubator be too quick for the eggs?

Do you have water bottles in the incubator? What volume of water?

The larger the volume of water, the slower the warm up.

Propane heaters is a MUST have if you are breeding and cant afford a generator.

This problem with many others would be avoided when all things are together before getting eggs. To know what to do and how when power goes out.


My generator runs my oil radiator while running propane heater to keep room at 88F so all i do is just open incubator door and thats it.
