Gradient heat question

So I just built myself a real nice 15/32 quart tub rack. I know normal gradient heat is from back to front length wise, but can I do a gradient heat back to front width wise since the 32s sit sideways on the rack? Id like to keep the heat consistent on all the shelves so I can put either the two 15s in or one 32 and not have to worry about the way the heat is setup on a particular shelf

front to back gradient is better, you won't get that with sideways tubs.

Well I suppose I could put flexwatt on the sides for shelves that are for 32s but id like some other opinions too. It would just be nice if I could just have it consisent on each shelf but if I have it different lengths of flexwatt for the different placement ill need a seperate thermostat correct?
