I believe the probe goes right on top of the glass.

Personally I don't have a thermometere with a probe (I check daily with my temp gun on top of the substrate and glass while I have a ambient air and humidity thermometer free standing in the tubs), so I'll provide some suggestions that could help in your situation.

If you're worried about him moving the substrate and laying right on top of the glass here's what I do as I was worried about the same thing: I bought some of that "repti carpet" from pet stores (I used those felt squares from Michaels craft stores also: $.99 for one) and laid it on top of where the heat mat is. On top of that I use newspaper and on top of that some paper towels. Temps stay as they should and I've never had any of my snakes burrow under it to the heat mat (perhaps I'm lucky but I do have two "diggers" and haven't had an problems with them).

Oh, why do you have two heat mats? You have a hot and a cold side correct?

Plus, if you want a good display snake (as BPs stay hidden often) you might consider a corn or a king. Mine are super active and love being out and about. Perhaps your daughters will enjoy watching one of those better than seeing a huddled and hidden BP all the time (they do better than BPs in tanks also because they arn't as picky as far as humidity/temp goes -IMO-)

    Hope that helps you some!
