Digital thermometer probe question

Just want to make sure I'm putting the probe in the right spot. I put it under all the substrate right In the middle of the UTH. is that correct? Just got back into ball pythons again and want to do things right. Also I have about 4-5 inches of substrate above the UTH. When I touch the substrate under the hide it's not that warm but thermometer is reading 94 degrees F. Thanks in advance

4-5 inches of any substrate I think is far too much, and the heat will not get through it. As far as the thermometer probe, it is ideal to have it under the substrate above the UTH, yes. I suggest only using 1/2 inch to 1 inch of substrate. What kind are you using?

I agree that's far too much sub for any kind of sub. I use a thin layer covering the whole tub. It's probably like a 1/2" layer.

I was thinking it was way to much also.. I'm using Eco earth

That is WAY too much then, the coco fiber is bad enough for heat to get through, I'd use the thinnest layer possible to be honest. I switched to aspen because the heat wasn't getting through the coco fiber at all for me...

Thanks for the replies guys. I took out a bunch of substrate and now have about 1/2 inch or less. Checked under the hide and the substrate is warm. Thanks again
