    BP Weight

I recently had to take my dog to Petsmart for a check up. It's a herp friendly one, so I decided to take my snake to get weighed.

He is 27 inches long and has a girth of 3 1/2 inches.

The lady said that he was 288 grams. Does that sound right? Plus 2 days before I fed him a 50 gram rat!

If that's right. His last feeding was a small rat (F/T) that weighed 50 grams. He had no problem with it. I also have large mice that come 4 in a package (F/T) that all together weight 76 grams net. Each would weigh 19 grams.

I guess my question is, do I continue with the rats or switch to 2 frozen mice.

Also when he eats 2 mice, you can barely see a bulge.

Sorry for long post. Thanks for reading!

I don't know the length of my BPs, but I have a few 2010s that are around that weight and less. I aim to feed about 10-15% of their body weight. Rat pups or weanling rats should be right around that for your BP, the rat pups I get are around 23-28grams. A 19 gram mouse might be a little small for him. Does he look skinny?

No. He eats well. I asked before and people said like maybe 300-350. I have been using 350, but again did not seem to have any problem with the rat.

I could feed him five mice and I swear he would eat them all LOL

They are called small rats. It seems every site and store call them something differet!

    Re: BP Weight

Totally depends on the snake. Age, sex, etc. My females tend to be smaller than the males at the same length. I think they tend to grow longer first, and then start putting on some weight.

Sounds like your feeding him just right. I would stick with the rat pups every 5-7 days. Eventually you are going to be feeding a rat only diet, and it's better to start when they are young.

I think he will be fine then, I don't want to start a rats vs. mice debate, but I personally prefer rats. How often do you feed him?

Every snake is different, I have some that seem to grow longer and some that seem content to add girth. My butter and my spider are both 2010s and right around 350grams, and the butter is girthy and the spider is long.

I feed him every 7 days. Are rat pups fur free like the mice pups? Mine have all their hair!

The rat pups I buy all have fur and are a little larger than an adult mouse.

Wow. The ones at Petsmart and are about 3 times as big. 19 grams Vs. 50 grams!

I think they are selling you small rats, not rat pups. 50 grams might be a little big for your BP, so if all they have is small rats or mice, I would stick with adult mice until he gets a little bigger.
