    Re: cigarette and snake?

I would suppose it's not fantastic for the snake but I haven't heard about any issues because of someone smoking around their BP.

I would assume it is just as dangerous to snakes as it is to humans. I don't think they will drop dead because they live in a house with someone who smokes, but their life span may be much shorter. Snakes have pretty sensitive respiratory systems to begin with, so just like a child, I wouldn't smoke around my snakes.

I know that if I walk into my snake room with a cigar blazing the snakes notice..... If I do it on feeding day most of the time the bp's will ignore their food and watch me. When I don't have a cigar lit on feeding day they go right to the food source.... That is just what I have found with mine....

Snakes have a sense of smell that is better than a dogs so yes they will notice it what reaction they have is anybodies guess. Cigarette and cigar smoke is just as much as a cancer risk for snakes as everything else polonium 210 is a smoke borne radioactive particle and has as much chance (1 in 5) as causing cancer in reptiles as in humans. Reptilian cancer is much slower spreading than human so I guess it isn't as big as a problem but then again there is no treatment either.

I don't smoke, so smokers feel free to call me a biggot for this, but I think it's common sense that smoking around ANY animal is a bad idea.

I see it as potentially harmful in two ways: inhalation, and burns.
The tobacco itself MIGHT not have much affect on them. However smoke is probably irritating, and it's the additives in cigarettes that I would be most concerned about; those will likely harm nearly any form of life as we know it.
If the person is handling the snake (or tending to it's care) while smoking, there's an obvious risk that the snake could get burned.

I AM a smoker and think the same thing. If I don't smoke around my son, I wouldn't find it okay to smoke around my animals....on a regular basis anyways. Like Dragonboy said he's gone in there with cigars and I highly doubt that has much of an affect, it's more the long term exposure that is harmful.

I just don't smoke around my bp's anymore. I can tell that they smell it and it distracts them from eating. Bp's don't need any more distractions to take them off feed...
