Check her eye out.. Any ideas?

Hey.

I always noticed my little normal girl had one eye slightly bigger then the other. Well as time passed by it got bigger. Last week it almost looked like the eye cap exploded, but she shed last night and it just looks like a huge eye cap again.

She eats perfectly fine, sheds, poops and pees normally.

Does anyone know what this could be?

I just took the pics about an hour ago. Sorry for the huge pics. But maybe it will help get a closer look.

Yikes! Looks like the eye is missing! She may have popped the eye out of the socket (always been bigger) some time ago and inflammation may have caused it to "get bigger". My guess is that the globe finally ruptured and during the shed she rubbed out the excess flesh (what was left of the eye ball). This happened to one of my rats and I have seen it happen to plenty of cats and dogs. I am sure a vet could do surgery on the site and make it look a whole lot better and reduce the risk of infection by closing the exposed cavity.

It looks similar to a problem I have seen on here with a couple of hatchlings?

The duct draining the "tears" from the eye was blocked which caused a huge fluid build up. Here are some of the links.

In the hatchlings it was probably something develomental but, since your snake was fine before hand it could be something as simple as substrate/ snot/ infection blocking it.

I would try and have a look at the roof of her mouth to see if there is anything obvious but booking a vet visit would be a good idea in case it is an infection or something.

Hopefuly it is fixable.

I just fed her last night so I don't want to mess with her mouth right now.

She will be taking a trip to the vet.

Ah! That tied knots in my stomach. That does not look comfortable, poor baby. Good job on deciding to take her to a vet

At any rate, let us know what the vet said. I'd like to know how to prevent this sort of thing. What substrate/tank or tub set-up does she live in?

I think in some other threads it was a genetic defect where the ducts in the eyes were clogged.

I have had the same problem. Luckily, the neonate girl with the tear duct blocked fixed itself one day.

Yea it looks like it's under the eye cap itself. I beleive vets had to drain the eyes of bugsy. Either way if it's getting worse she needs to see the vet asap. Since it just happened I'm also leaning towards some infection or plugged duct. Hopefully it can be easily fixed.
