Difference between AFT and Leopard Geckos
What is the difference between these two? They both look exactly the same with the AFT being a little bigger, maybe. Can anyone clarify? Thanks

Re: Difference between AFT and Leopard Geckos
To be honest, there isn't much difference between these two animals. Concerning husbandry, Leopard geckos have been known to eat their substrate. So they should be kept on reptile carpet or paper towel. Fat tails on the other hand, are less prone to eat substrate and can be safely kept on Eco Earth, or coconut fibers.
That's really the only difference I can think of. I'm not sure if fat tails are bigger, but they do seem to be "stockier". They have relatively shorter limbs and digits compared to leopard geckos and their abdomens are a little rounder.

As far as appearances, they look extremely similar.
AFTs need a bit more humidity, but aside from that they are kept similarly.
They are completely different species, though, and cannot even hybridize. They are apart of the same subfamily of Eublepharinae (geckos with eyelids).
Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) are from the middle east, India, and central Asia.
African fat tails (Hemitheconyx caudicinctus) are found in Western Africa.

I think AFT are a bit less flighty, but I've only handled leos, not owned any. There's TONS more morphs of leos, but AFT are newer to the pet industry and the morphs are mostly brand new(with a couple exceptions).
I like my AFT a lot. They've been very mellow, very easy to keep, although mine seem to only like crickets, not the mealworms or any of the worms actually.
