Small Things Amaze Me.
Today I was thinking about how BP's know if they have mites or not. Since often they will soak and lose their appetite at the first few noticeable mites. I relate this to a human having a tick, I have no idea it is on me until I either feel it, or feel it moving. Even then they are hard to detect. So I wonder how BP's can detect them, through feeling? Either way, it is an amazing feat of instinct!

Now that you mention it that is rather amazing. I think it might have to do with where the mites go, if they tend to irritate the snake's eyes and vent then they would know very soon. What surprises me is that their tiny brains understand that water kills them and they attempt to drown the mites. To me that is the truly amazing thing.

I completely agree. ball pythons are incredibly intelligent. another astonishing feat I witnessed a few years ago when I had my normal in a terrarium, she had swallowed the rat unconscious and the rat had started coming to when she was about 3/4 of the way done. once she got him down she climbed to the very top of her tree and then just dropped off landing on the place the rat was. im not sure if she purposefully did that but it sure did the trick and left me amazed.
