Re: Fortaz
fortaz (ceftazidime) is 20mg/kg SQ/IM q 72h
I would use the baytril (enrofloxacin) routine: 5 mg/kg IM q 24h resistant:10 mg/kg IM q 24h
IM = `intramuscular = in the muscle
q 24h = every 24 hours
there are you tube videos that shows how to give your snake a shot in the muscle. ralph davis shows how in one of them.
also, sometimes fortaz or a drug that's in that family is used with baytril. it makes the baytril work better and also helps in fighting bacteria that's not sensitive to baytril . I also used a drug called cefuroxime that works well with Amikacin or baytril.

I'm just wanting to know if people have had good success with it, I've been to a reptile specialist who gave me Fortaz, which is actually safer then baytril, and easier on ur snake because of their slow metabolisms, every 3 days is better on them then every 24 hrs, I am curious if people have had good experiences with it.

Re: Fortaz
if a drug works well for a R.I. it doesn't mean that every time that snake gets a R.I. that it will work well. what's making the snake sick has to be sensitive to the drug that's being used in treating that snake. this is why a vet will do a culture to see what the bacteria is most sensitive to. snakes usually get gram - (neg) bacteria. we usually get gram + (pos) and thats why the drugs we use are not used on snakes. also gram - are nasty, they are usually more complex than gram + and require very strong drugs.

Fortaz is a great drug for RI's. Just the fact that your Vet gave it to you tells BG he/she knows a little something about treating reptiles. If given the choice, BG would use Fortaz over Baytril, but both of them combined usually cures any problem you may have. Getting a culture done is best, but treating your snake with Fortaz while you wait is a great start. It works well for most BP RI's.

Fortaz is my absolute first choice for treating RI. I have used it with great success. I agree if your vet gave you Fortaz, you found a good one

Don I wasnt trying to say that baytril
Doesn't work I was just stating that all the research I've done on it shows it to be safer, What I also ment that I haven't been able to find testimonials on it and wondered about others experiences with it, not putting down u or baytril, just stating.

understood, I was just trying to say that without a culture what ever drug you start with, is just a shot in the dark. I've tried fortaz and so far had no success with it by itself. do I think it's a bad choice by itself. no, it's just what ever my snake had wasn't sensitive to it. I had great luck with baytril, did you get my P.M. ? this will answer a lot of your questions for R.I.s. let me know if you were able to get the link to work. don
