Meds for RI questions ?
So is Enrofloxacin aka Baytril(don't know if I spelled that right) the best stuff to use for curing RI in ball pythons??
Reason I ask is because I don't know many exotic vets out here so I went to my local vet and that's what she prescribe, Enrofloxanic. I've done some research and I only have read about it being used on cats and dogs.

Yes, Baytril is fine to use on your snake. There are other options out there however it is probably the most commonly prescribed.

I just successfully treated an RI in my spider using Baytril. One shot a day for 8 days, and before the last shot his symptoms were already radically lessening.

Hmmmmmm well i'm not sure. That was the first RI I've ever had experience with so I just went with the vets word. We did have to do shots on the opposite side of the body every other day (right side one day, left side next) It seems to have worked though, Charlie is much more "active" (he's kind of lazy anyway) than when we first picked him up and the mucus is officially all cleared up as of last week.

It may be the most "commonly prescribed" but it's not the best. The best(in BG's opinion) is Fortaz. Most Vets have no clue what it is though. If they do, there's a good chance you're at a good reptile Vet. If they've never heard of it....find another...REALLY.
It is much better to give both Fortaz and Baytril than just one or the other. This will cure 90% of anything your snake may get. A lot of Vets that know what they're doing will prescibe this treatment while waiting on a culture....or they may just prescribe it to see if it works. If it doesn't, then a culture is needed for sure.

It all depends. It can be prescribed a few different ways with varying success.

Fortaz is my first choice, with Baytril being the second. I'm not so fond of amikacin.......it seems to take more and longer treatment. Most vets do not know of or prescribe Fortaz......I'm lucky enough to have a vet who does. But Baytril is also fine, I've never had Baytril not to work.

The "best" drug to use is the one that fights that particular strain of bacteria that your ball python has.
That can ONLY be done through a sensitivity test and trans-tracheal swab with culture.
Good luck.
