can i use same width heat tape at differnt lengths?

could i use 3 inch heat tape. two lengths at a foot a piece, and one at two feet long all the same width hooked up to a herpstat?

yes you can.

The only thing you want to avoid is heat tape that has different wattage. Likw 3" and 11" for instance.

I answered with the assumption that your 3" came from the same source. Make sure that all of your 3" heat tape is the same wattage. They can be purchased in different wattages.

Just to clarify something - the ratings on flexwatt are by the foot.

So your two foot piece will be twice the wattage of the foot long segments and will therefore reach a different temperature for the same electrical input.

You might be able to use dimmers to balance the temps between the two sources though.

You could do what dr del said and use a dimmer but I personally wouldn't do it. I'm sure it can be set up to work but it would make me nervous. I'd get a second thermostat if at all possible.
