    Jaw Popping?

    -Hello

For some reason when I opened my mouth yesterday to yawn it popped, and now it clicks whenever I open my mouth. Really annoying. I went online to look and it says it could be TMJ, but it is usually accompanied by pain. I have no pain at all, nor when it first happened. It just pops a little when I open my mouth. Just curious to see if this happened to anyone else one here, and how long it took for it to go back to normal. I know medical advice should be given by a doctor, but I don't think its serious. I just want to know how long it usually takes to get better, because its driving me nuts

    Sweet, thanks.

I was getting worried because it can lead to a more serious condition. And the fact that its right next to my ear so every time I open I hear loud and clear. Thanks for your input!

    Re: Jaw Popping?

I am 36 now and mine has been that way since I was 13...but mine is caused by getting punched in the face several times. It pops at the joint next to my ear ANY time I open my mouth, to eat, talk, whatever. In the mornings after laying on it all night my wife can hear it across the room its so loud.
Hope it goes away soon for ya...because it takes a very long to not be bothered by it (as much anyway).

    Re: Jaw Popping?

Mine started popping about a year ago (I'm 35)...it's really annoying when I eat, but within the last few months I started having difficulty opening my mouth in the mornings (lock-jaw?)...so off to the doc I went! My dentist happened to also be a TMJ specialist so I've started a 3 month treatment plan where I wear a plastic mouth piece that prevents my jaws from completely closing. From what I understand, there's a cartilage bit in the joint that is actually out of place when my mouth is closed...when I open my mouth and hear that "pop," it's actually the sound of the cartilage piece popping back into place. The mouth piece actually helps decompress the joint and reduce inflammation (especially at night and while driving when my jaw is really tense). I've noticed a difference in just a couple of weeks of wearing it and hope I won't have to resort to surgical intervention!

Anyway, like you it's not a painful condition...more annoying than anything...but it really freaked me out when it got to a point that I couldn't open my mouth for a few seconds! Hopefully yours just needs a little time to heal!

    Re: Jaw Popping?

I have severe TMJ and it can be horribly painful, but only when I overwork my jaw. I can't chew gum or eat a lot of very chewy food. The pop is so loud because the joint is right next to your ear canal.
If you just popped it a little, it should go away after a while. I would reccomend no gum, no extended singing, etc, so your jaw has plenty of time to rest and the inflamation can go away.
If it continues past a couple weeks, you might want to get it checked, but most doctors won't reccomend anything unless it's severe or painful.

How weird- the exact same thing happened to me a week or two ago. It hasn't stopped yet, but I've mostly been ignoring it.

    Re: Jaw Popping?

I've just been trying to not use my jaw like a lot of you said. And if I open my mouth I make sure I do it in a way where it won't pop. I notice if move my jaw slightly over, and then open, its fine. Definitely weird. Thank god I have none of these locking problems some of you are pointing out. That would freak me out
