I love my little Canon Powershot. For a point and shoot they're very fairly priced and can still take some very nice pictures.

If you're a beginner, it's a good idea to start with a point and shoot as opposed to a DSLR.

I highly recommend the Sony DSC-H50. It's a "beginner's" camera in that is very easy to use on the automatic setting. However, if you figure out the basics, you can also play around with shutter speed, ISO, filters, etc, and there are a great variety of lenses you can purchase (macro, fisheye, wide angle, etc) to improve the quality even more. It's a great camera to start out with, but it will take you a ways as well.

I think DSC-H50's go for around $300 now, although it was more when I bought mine in 08.

Ive used my GFs Nikon d7000 and its a awesome 16mp camera and takes awesome pictures. But can be a hassle to learn

wow crazy4hers those are great pics...I use a Fuji Finepix S700,thinking about upgrading but not to DSLR,I don't think I;d use it enough to warrant spending the money.

I shoot pro nikons (d700 x2 & D3X) and if you are beginning I'd not buy an SLR, there are a ton of great point and shoots cameras on the market. I have always had a soft spot for fuji I like the sensors (IF only they didn't discontinue the pro line the S5 has so much more range than my nikons it makes me sad.) The Canon PS are great too, I just don't like the slrs much but that is just my opinion. BUDGET is a big one here. The olny thing I can say is personally I'd avoid the Kodaks, and the ones with names you have never heard of.
