arboreals are generally terrible first time snakes, they almost all have very specific and unforgiving care requirements and are usually very tempermental and bitey ( with very large teeth mind you ). an amazon tree boa would be a hair easier, but youd prolly get bit more lol. and as someone else stated, if you want quality cbb, expect to pay for it.

Green Tree Pythons or "chondros", can be difficult as a first time snake. They are not a species that can be checked on every three or four days. Many can be handled, and some can't. Also stay away from Farmed or Imports as a first Green Tree purchases, they may be cheap but you will make up for that with Vet bills.
Everyone needs a Chondro(or three or ten).

They are not hard to take care of at all. They are just different. Do your research and you will be fine. But I will say they make a better display snake than a pet, but I have known people that have very tame ones they can handle without any trouble. Mine are not because I do not handle them.

I know that both have been mentioned already (I'm just adding emphasis), but anyone who wants a GTP, be they an experienced herper or new to reptiles, should check both out.

I've always been a proponent of "get the animal you want" rather than "get a so-called beginner animal". People become bored with beginner animals if that wasn't the species they wanted in the first place, and that is never good.

Nothing will get in the way of your friend taking excellent care of a GTP if that is what he really wants.

The main problem is that most of them that you see for sale are imported.

i disagree... i think this was true several years ago, but other than then same 5 or 6 retailers online and at shows, i don't see too many imports. a lot of US CBB GTP's are available today. nearly every show i go to has at least one vendor with babies/juvies for sale.

that said, i agree that you can get one for a first snake... you just need to know what you're doing. kinda like getting a siberian husky for a first dog... not the easiest dog to properly control and take care of for a newbie but not necessarily a bad idea... especially in this day and age where info is so readily available to everyone.
