Rescuing/Saving Herps Ect

The best advice I can give on this subject or any is this ... If you want to rescue a creature, make sure you're well prepared! Armor yourself by being informed and ready for the unexpected. If you take it into your care a creature you're unfamiliar with, and can't properly provide to the needs of the creature in general, then you haven't rescued that creature. The creature has just been exchanged into the hands of someone who again does not know how to care for this creature. And is ultimately back at square one to receive proper care. We all want to do what we can for this hobby and life style of loving reptiles. But sometimes saying "no" will be in the best interest of the creature.

I've been on this site for 3 years or so, and have seen many "I rescued" threads. You open the link and the first thing you see is "So, how do I care for it?" Just my 2 cents on this matter. Happy herping!

Agreed, though I wouldn't have gotten interested in leopard geckos or raising my own cricket/mealie collonies if I didn't take an adoption.

Everything came with the animal and a guide on how to care for it, so I guess I was better off than some people. Though I did go home and verify everything was being done right (which it wasn't) and made a LOT of changes.

Please don't think in any way I was trying to single you out. It was just something I've seen many times over the years and there has been people who basically hadn't the slightest clue of the situation that they got themselves into! Their heart was in the right place, but the knowledge wasn't there to follow.

I know what you're saying and completely agree. I took no offence or think you were singling me out.

Craigslist should post that at the top of the pets community page, just like the scam warnings!

I think I might take in a reptile I wasn't sure of, at this point...but I have a lot of experience with different species, and feel confident I could get the information quickly. If I see something sick and starved, better my slightly competent hands than where they are presently. I certainly would never pay for one, though.
