have you ever had a BP that refused ASF rats?
I started breeding Natal rats for my snakes , but one of my snakes don't seem interested in eating them. I'm not sure if he's just gone off feed or not.
all my other snakes switched over without a problem. I'm going to try offering him a regular rat to see if he'll take it , but I just haven't had time to go to the store to get one.
I just wanted to know if anyone's experienced this before , where their BP was eating normal rats but refused ASF's. I've read posts mainly about people experiencing feeding problems when trying to get their snakes to switch from ASF's to normal rats , but not the other way around.
all of my snakes are captive bred , by the way.

Re: have you ever had a BP that refused ASF rats?
Happened to my 1st 2 BPs. Got them from the same breeder who was feeding them rats. I wanted to start them on ASF but they wouldn't take it. They keep smelling it and back off. Went and got them some mice and they took it immediately.
Sometimes it's the f/t rats not being fresh, but in my case and yours, I think they just plain don't like it.
Another thing you can try is to feed him 2 asf of smaller size. Just to get him used to the smell.
Good luck!

I think what I'll try first is what I mentioned, offer a regular rat just to see if he's refusing it because he doesn't like the ASF's.
if that turns out to be the case, then I may try rubbing a normal rat against the ASF to transfer some of the smell just so he'll start eating them.
The reason I started breeding the ASF's was because I read they didn't smell as much , I don't want to have to start breeding domestic rats as well now.

I've had several that wouldn't take ASF (hence one of the reasons I stopped breeding them). Have some that will take anything put in their tub and one that will take anything but a mouse (she's such a girl!).

Re: have you ever had a BP that refused ASF rats?
I was talking to the breeder I got my BP from and he said to just wait it out since it hasn't been that long.
He was saying if the snake didn't take the ASF , then he most likely won't eat a normal rat either and that he's probably just gone off feed.
I guess I'll just keep sticking one in there every week 'til he eats.

I have a young BP that won't eat them at all...not because she's not interested but because she will only eat rats with black spots or that are totally black. ASF's tend to be browns, whites and grey.
She's odd, but each BP is different.

I have had refusals only with the on set of infection, with ASFrs. This time of year who knows. Just watch them and if they still refuse in a couple days switch prey, try a mouse or rat of the correct size( maybe even smaller than normal.
