How hot is your house?
So if you read my caging thread you know I've been stressing over my temps as I am eager to go ahead and get my snakes. My biggest foe here being the ambient air temp of like 65 in the living room when the thermostat upstairs is set for 72.
It makes me wonder how people with pythons and boas get the hot "Cool spot" temps they need in the 80's and stuff.
So how's your heat set up? Multiple heat sources? Is your house just hot? The thought made me curious as I hoped someday in the future to own a boa or GTP. But this house temp problem is drivin me nuts.
As for me I think I am gonna try using some insulation boards under the cage and heat pad. And hope that carries over to the other side abit as well. I'd like to move them upstairs (easy solution) but there's just not much space. I didn't think keeping the cool side 70 or above would be so hard. I'm starting to see 68's and 66's on my thermometer in my nightmares. Maybe I should use a larger pad. I bought 11x17's but the cage is 36'. Rats don't like it to hot though. What's funny is I thought I was gonna have a hard time keeping things cool.

Re: How hot is your house?
I have a space heater in my snake room, and a window air conditioner in the summer.

in my somewhat limited experience, rack setups with tubs hold heat pretty well. One easy solution would be to make a rack and enclose it in a cabinet. Maybe it's something to do with having several smaller heating elements in a somewhat confined space. I've got all my snakes setup in a closet that stays warmer than the rest of the apartment and that seems to work pretty well.

Same here
Window unit goes in as soon as the room temps start raising up over the oil filled heaters' set points.

Re: How hot is your house?
The snake room is in the basement which naturally stays at 78-80 during the hotter months for cooler months I have a space heater.

Re: How hot is your house?
In the winter my house is always cool so I use a light for the ambient temps. If you have it on a dimmer you don't run into the humidity issues lights bring.

Re: How hot is your house?
House stays about 70-72 all year long. Heating or Air Conditioning is used to maintain that temp. My snake room is somewhat small and it stays about 80-84 degrees in there.
Your snakes will be fine.

I appreciate it. You don't think the night drop down to the mid high 60's is to low? I am gonna get those insulating boards tomorrow and temp it out. I always worry about everything to death. But I'd hate for an animal to get sick cause I was dumb.

I thought about a light but my NPI cages are slanted...there's no good way to pop a light on them unless I buy like a standing lamp and pop a heat bulb in there.
I am envious of those who can.
I considered a space heater. and I will definatly get one for winter but I wondered how practical it would be to just buy me 2 to 6 degrees with that. Also wondering if it would be a fire hazard sitting on the tile floor.
Thanks for the responses everyone!

Re: How hot is your house?
Why do you drop the temps into the 60's at night. That is too low for the ball pythons. I would think you will have to keep the temps up above 75 at night.
I don't really know, I've never had a night time drop like that for anything other than corn snakes when they were coming out of brumation.
Good Luck!

I am getting Old World Ratsnakes and they like 70 to 85. The bottom of the house does it on it's own trust me I am not doing it on purpose!! The thermostat stays on 72 (or the roomates rebel)) And the top of the house stays about 73 to 75. But the bottom gets down to 65 at times.
I am just trying to keep it out of the 60's.
