Refusing Meals
Hi! I have a young male hognose who is about 11 inches long. He was eating ok at first, with some meals skipped, but now he is just ignoring evreything I give him. I scented the pinkie with tuna a few days ago and he completely ignored it. But he does seem hungry. He usually has just his head or his whole body stuck up out of the substrate. I've been offering every week now but he's gone about 3-4 weeks without food. Should I be starting to worry? Any tips on how to get him to eat? I'm worried since he is young and not eating this might affect his growth and development. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Refusing Meals
I wouldn't worry about it unless he starts losing too much weight. At eleven inches in length, he probably doesn't have much growth left in him anyway. I'm not sure I even own a male over a foot long...
Also, I wouldn't resort to scenting if he was eating unscented before. Last thing you want is for him to decide he likes that more, as you could have a difficult time getting him back to unscented later.

Thanks! This guy and a young adult corn are my first snakes so I'm not sure what is normal and what I should worry about. Thanks for easing my worries lol.

Re: Refusing Meals
My Hog used to be picky. Would get offended and hiss at the food, (the only thing that will generate a hiss anymore) and generally not eat if you were around. It was always a hit or miss, and I'd say it would eat more like once every other week for a decent stretch of time.
Now, once the meal is defrosted, I run it under hot water. When I present it, the Hog takes it instantly, and has eaten perfectly since I began using that technique.
Maybe it might work for you too?
