    Re: Dalmation Mice

Piebaldism in Mammals carries genetic defects, they generally carry maga-colon so keep an eyeout for the higher white ones and issues.

Other than that love the little mohawks.

Most of the mice in those photos are NOT piebald.

    They are variegated!
You are really lucky to have this gene!

Variegated mice have a pattern of (typically on poorly bred/non show animals) a solid white head stripe, and blotchy spots on their body. The gene is similar to splashing, but whereas splashing is colour on colour splotches, variegated is colour on white splotches.

The one that is mostly white, is most likely piebald, the others are variegated.

You probably shouldn't use variegated mice to breed feeders (I assume these are feeders) because the gene that causes variegated, when homozygous, results in death (inside the womb) and you will not get high yield litters if you breed variegated X variegated since a percentage of the pups will never be born.

It's an awesome gene though, and when bred to show standards, can be absolutely beautiful!
