Hoggy Question
Ok, so i bought a hognose, he was hatched May 1, i got him the middle of June. He's eaten every week for me, pooping as normal, but he has yet to shed for me since i've gotten him. is this something i should worry about or do hoggies just not grow as fast?

Re: Hoggy Question
As someone not experienced in hoggies but with a couple other snake species, yeah for a yearling to not shed in 3-4 months is weird.
Then again, hoggies don't grow especially fast, don't get to a huge size when fully grown, especially in length.

Re: Hoggy Question
Don't know about your hogs, but mine grow insanely fast. I had an albino girl go from 42 grams to 200 grams in a couple of months. She's only fed once a week, and she doesn't even look very thick (compared to most of my other girls).
The only ones I have that haven't grown fast are ones that are irregular feeders. I have one girl from '08 that already got passed up by my '09 hatchlings.
As for shedding, I don't know how often would be considered normal, but my '09s have only shed twice so far and have grown quite a bit in between sheds. I don't see why it would really be anything to worry about either way. If it eats and drinks, it's fine regardless of sheds.

My mexican hognose subadults shed, on average, only 5 times in their first 15 months.

i was hoping you would respond, as you see to be pretty knowledgeable about hognoses.
He is definitely growing. he's about 10 inches long or so and starting to grow in girth now, rather than length. I'm just being paranoid, because this is my first snake. Ever since i've gotten him, i've expected to check on him and see his eyes are blue, but nothing yet.
i figured everything was ok, since he's eating and such, but i just wanted to make sure. Plus i was curious how often everyone else's hognoses had shed in the first year.

Re: Hoggy Question
My Hoggie shed 5 times the 1st year. Her eyes never blue, but her belly gets faded, kinda foggy looking. She refuses meals and burrows under the aspen on the warm side for a couple weeks until its time to shed.
