    petco sux....

ok... i was in petco today to get some aspen bedding. and i nearly had a heart attack when i saw the ball python cage... their where 6 ball pythons in a 10 gallon tank, all with mites and many, a stuck shed. they had NO heat source, and a super small hide. i asked to see the manager, and showed him the bp's. i showed him the mites and the sheds. And he said, "those are markings, not mites. And they are all healthy." i was mad... i then found myself screaming at the manager, telling him how stupid he was. and how you are killing them... now i dont think he was expecting that from a 13 year old. i feel that because of my age he was treating me poorly. i hate being front up lied to... any way, several minitues later, the manager returned. he asked me to leave or he would call security. I gave them a little piece of my mind by an email.

Thats rediculuse! He probobley did overlook you becuse of your age ( which isnt right). Does your mom, dad or any adult friend know anything about bp's? You could go back in there with them, if it was really that bad.

You did the right thing speaking up. The one we have in this area is so so. I have never seen stuck sheds or mites on them, but i have seen one with blisters, and i wonder about the high humidity in the tanks. The ones here do have heat sources so i guess they arent all the same and the ambient temps seem to ok but i dont think there is much gradient in those lil ass tanks with the light over the center. Let me know if they respond to the email. Goodluck to change.

We need more people to education others on proper bp care. Most of the time, people just don't know that they sre doing something wrong!

    So sad

There has been so many posts about Petco lately... So far I haven't spent a single dime at Petco for my snake's set up, and I hope to keep it that way.

I guess i'm one of the lucky ones that has a great Petco. They actually have a reptile specialist on staff who also works at a zoo not too far from here. He is also a BP breeder so it's great to just go in and talk to him about the projects he has going on at the moment. I guess I should just stay in my home town!

While I do understand stupidity, cursing him out and being rude does not get anything done. Some people you just can't talk to, because they don't want to listen. You shouldn't sit there and curse them out. That makes you look bad, and will get you kicked out of stores like above. I agree with you though that the conditions don't sound good at all.

I agree, not only are the prices really high, but i once walked into a petco to find a bearded dragon dead in a spot of muddy sand, i was furious. but the next time i see that they have bad conditions ill ensure them a visit from dept. of heath or animal control. Id rather them not have anything than be killing the poor animals.

    Re: petco sux....

I, like gknight, have a good petco. They have a solid display unit, with abover average sized tanks from what I can tell from other pet stores in town. I get my rats from there (lack of better place to get them from, but if anyone has suggestions, I'm open), and my (big) baby girl gobbles them right up. I've not seen a sickly, dropsey, or flea infested rat yet. Its also a newer store though, <5 years in operation. So that might have something to do with it. My local reptile store doesn't do mammals so they don't have a food supply for me.
