    One vs two hides

I've owned and cared for my snake for a little over a year, now. I keep her in a 28 qt Sterilite tub and she's up to over 1100 g now. The tub sits atop an end table in my office, with very little foot traffic. Right now, she has two hides but she has a habit of moving hides from one side to the other. Last week, she even managed to have one resting on the other, and she was under both. This week, she managed to rest one hide atop her water dish and spilled quite a bit.

I'm thinking of going to a single hide and letting her move it around to where she wants to be (hot or cold). What are your thoughts on this? From what I can tell, most keepers that use a single hide do so when snakes are kept in racks with a bit more privacy. Would this be appropriate for my application, or should I just stick with two hides like we always have?

    Re: One vs two hides

id say stick with 2 hides. cuz she not moving them to where it wants em its just moving around and pushing them. and in a rack 3/4th of the sides of the tubs are surrounded which gives them security but on a open table she needs the security of both hides

If the tub is "opaque" it should be ok to try only 1 hide , however if you notice stress or she refuses a meal then put the other hide back in.

i have my snakes in 28qt tubs till 1500 grams. They get 2 hides till their 1000 grams then i take one out. They will move the hide around the tub to thermoregulate with out getting out of the hide.

41qt tubs can be used with 1 hide as well with larger 2000+gram females/males.

I just had a mental image of that looking something like the BP version of a Hermit crab...

I dont see why you can't use only one hide. I only use one hide for my 900 gram male who's in a 28 quart. I can't even remember the last time he's missed a meal.

Yeah. I think I'll try it and see how she fares. She really does move them all over the place as it is. I don't believe the hide movement is just the result of her scooting around aimlessly, but rather her getting to that sweet spot in the tank that's the perfect temp. She's in a low traffic area too, despite the clear tub. I suppose I'll give it a shot...
