500 grams is generally safe, as long as you keep an eye on them and don't put them to work too hard. Some few individuals will breed them even smaller, though I personally would not. The risk is that the male will become exhausted, and then fall ill, and also that it might not have the reserves of a larger animal, since breeding males often stop eating.
Males can breed more vigorously (with multiple females) once they're 800 grams.
Males CAN breed as soon as they're producing sperm, which can be as tiny as 300 to 400 grams!
As a result of all of the above, most males that are good feeders can be bred when they are 1 year old.
