    Socializing a Chahoua
Hello! I recently acquired a 1 month old chahoua and all has been going well, but he is extremely skiddish around me and runs every time I open up his enclosure. Is this normal for really young chahouas? What's the best way to socialize them? When he's awake he'll stick to his glass and just stare at me and when I get close to the glass he doesn't flinch or run or anything, but as soon as I open his enclosure up he darts away.

1 month old is young. I got my "Chewie," Ferry, at 1-2 years old.

I think normal, especially at that size, to be a little darty.

I would basically let him be until he's a little bigger. Only handle when necessary until a decent size - maybe 30-40G if Pine Island like my guy, who is about 60G, or a little smaller if a mainland which stay smaller as far as I know.

What you can do is feed him from your fingers or small tongs (with bugs - they are viscous feeders on those and when he's bigger you'd rather not be on the receiving end). I hold the gel in my hand and Ferry will eat from the bowl or lick off my fingers. He's pretty good even though I only handle him 1-2X a week. However, as they get bigger, they can be very cage defensive - FYI. Don't take it personally, they just protect their territory. I use light gloves to get him out and once out he's a sweetie.

Any Rhaco questions, just ask. I have Ferry the Chewie and Ezzy the Leachie.
