Canister vs. HOB filters

What's the pros and cons of canister vs HOB?

If it makes any difference, we're planning on going with about 4 or so cichlid 40 or 55 gal tank.

A nice HOB works pretty well. The Aquaclear 110 is a decent filter. You can run two on a 55 gallon and get decent bioload. They have a fairly low cost to operate. I personally would recommend starting with a nice canister. You could run an Eheim Pro 3 on that size tank and load. This would have a huge bioload capability too and are pretty easy to maintain. I also prefer keeping the tank clear so you can run inline water heaters to maximize your tank space. You just need to make sure you're not picking huge cichlids. A common mistake is to get multiple species that get 5-6". You should really have a single pair of that size in a tank that big. You can always look at Dwarf species too. You could do 4-5 pairs in a tank that size. They are super interesting. Good luck!

2x AC110s and you will be golden. canisters are great to, but IMO anything under 100 gallon id rather do HOBs

2 AC 110's will actually be more than enough. Ive run 2 of these on a 75 gallon with 20+ cichlids in it with no problems.
