sealing particle board

I just got finished building my first rack out of melamine but got a really good deal on some particle board. i figured i could use it some how, the guy at the home depot said i could seal it with the oil based kilz. i was wondering if anyone has done this before and is it safe for snakes.

when I sealed my cages I used Minwax Polycrylic. It's a water based sealer. Works great! A word of advice when using sealer always go with the grain of the wood if possible. It helps with better protection of the wood. It's not critical but, I find that the wood accepts the seal better that way.

Also keep in mind that people at home depot aren't always the brightest and when it comes to reptiles they probably won't know whats best for them. I would always use something water based when sealing something reptile related. Especially if you have the animal coming in direct contact with it. Water based sealers usually have no smell when off gassing.
