It's cool having such a wide range of natural fauna in the areas where members here live. I'd have to travel hundreds of miles to see a desert tort, but I don't suppose you've ever been late coming home from work because a carolina black bear was on the interstate. :)

rofl...nope. never seen a live bear :( but we do have them. just a few hours north. are they that common where you are? bears are cool...lol

No, not that common until you get an hour or so north of here. The one on the interstate was actually there as a result of a release gone bad. He didn't want to be where the rehabilitators wanted him to be. ;) My aunt grew up in Western NC and gave a wild black bear a sandwich once when she was about 4 or 5 years old. Her grandmother had a fit when she realized that her granddaughter wasn't talking about a make-believe bear when she saw them together out the window. That was about 75 years ago, though.

I don't know if she handed it to him, put it on the ground, or what, but my great grandmother looked out the window and saw little Ruth at the swing set with a wild black bear a few minutes after she had come inside and asked for "a sandwich for me and a sandwich for the bear." She thought Ruth was hungry and wanted two sandwiches so she made up the bear, but then she saw them out there together. Ruth didn't know enough to be scared of it. She was very lucky!
