    I only have an exto terra tank is a herpstat necessary for only one enclosure or they more for a rack system

    A herpstat is great for any heating element regardless of the enclosure you’re heating. I use Herpstat exclusively for all of my enclosures and racks.

    What kind of heating element do you have?

    Regardless what type of enclosure, thermostats are needed. You don't necessarily have to have that exact brand, but that is one that is highly regarded. I'm perfectly happy with my $30 inkbirds whether a single enclosure or rack, but the type of heating element matters. Herpstat is pulse proportional, which is important if you are going to be using ceramic heat.
