Gina the Rio Bravo Pokigron Suriname progression thread
Well Gina finally arrived. 2016 pure Rio Bravo Pokigron Suriname female. Only took a couple pics and then let crawl into her cage to get settled in. She's such a tiny little worm. This is her progression thread.

    Perfection.

The Holy Grail of boa constrictors IMO.

Bred by one of the world's authorities on boa constrictors.

I think I want one,,,,, why'd you have to do this to me LOL:carrot:

    Congrats!

Haha, yeah she is pretty awesome. Kind of dark color as I just took her out of the box. She is super mellow though. And she looks like she is settling in well and adopting the 'lazy' behavior like my other boas lol. Came home to find this...

Sorry for the blurriness. Didn't want to slide the door open and disturb her as she is new. She's just lounging it on top of her warm hide and her colors are lightening up. I think she is feeling more comfortable.

Thanks all. And Chris is awesome to deal with. We've been just chewing the fat about boas on FB messenger too. He really cares about where and how his little baby boas go and are taken care of.

Look at how tall and rectangular she is!

That trait is typical for most boa constrictors but most prominent in the Suris and Guyana boas.

She looks like a belt or piece of ribbon. I have to be honest, I had fully planned on getting a Poki, Suri from my friend who has two Rio Bravo models but they didn't breed last year. Then I was looking at Brisbane coastals or Bredli carpets.

I LOVE my retic and I think he was an interesting, wonderful choice,,, but you and I are boa folks, though you wouldn't know as I only have one, but I still want a boa like that. OH crap and a Bredli too LOL!

This boa of yours is such high quality. A true locality animal. Gus was/is very particular about his animals and there is no doubt that is a special snake.

I couldn't be happier for you.

I'll thumbs up every picture you post of this girl.

    Simply awesome!

    Lol thanks man.

Yeah she is definitely tall. Was talking to Chris about the Rio bravo Pokigrons and he said they are his favorite and are just awesome personality and mellowness. He got the parents straight from Gus' 2006 litters. He asked if I was planning on breeding. I said no, just a pet. He said well if you do, this female is the pinnacle of BCC with being a pure Rio Bravo Pokigron.

I do like the Peruvians and honestly planned on one of those but then I saw this Suri and being Pokigron and pure blood Rio Bravo along with the good price, I just couldn't pass it up. Also Chris Wolf really cares about his animals as he was giving me all kinds of tips and stuff for her as well as wanting to know how she was when she got there and also wants pics of her in the future to watch her grow. He really loves all his animals lol.

And yeah, even Gus chimed in on my pics of her on FB and said wow, nice animal. Good luck.

I'm really excited to have her and still cant get over how mellow she is. She is just relaxing on top of her warm hide and doesn't care a single bit if you come up and look at her lol.

I was debating on another SD retic or the Peruvians like I said but I have absolutely no regrets in this girl and am actually VERY glad I got her. She is everything I wanted in a BCC plus did I mention how mellow she is? :D I wasn't sure I was quick enough though as he sold them all within 2 hours....

Thanks. If you want a Rio Bravo Pokigron Suri, I would recommend Chris Wolf for sure. Like I said, I have been talking to him through FB messenger just about boas and stuff and he is really awesome. One of the best breeders I've dealt with personally. I believe he will have another litter around summer but gotta be quick. Like I said, the 3 he had up for sale, went in 2 hours. The 2 females were gone in about an hour lol. Some guy snatched up the right pic one and I wanted the left pic one so it worked out perfect for us haha.

Holy cow, what a first feeding. I always feed my babies on a sheet of printer paper. Well this time I figured the suri was new and I didn't want to stress her out so I just fed her normally. I gave her a smaller than normal meal as she is eating medium mice but I gave her a hopper to start out and just work up to mediums again. Well she ate it and got a whole mouthful of Eco Earth. So much she couldn't close her mouth fully.

So I let her sit there for about 30 mins figuring she would figure it out. Nope not really lol. So I had to intervene, I tried 'brushing' it off with a twisted up paper towel while she was in the back of the cage. Well that pissed her off and she hissed at me lol. So I left her alone about 20 mins more and still nothing. So I said, ok little snake, tough love time. I grabbed her out and put her above and kind of in her water bowl. She dunked her head a couple times and kind of swam underwater lol. I then used a wet paper towel to wipe her 'lips' off and wipe downward to pull out anything that was stuck. Well that worked, her mouth now closes normally.

She was a real trooper and took it although she did darken up in color showing her objection to this lol. One heck of a first feeding haha. After all this I showed her her warm hide door and she was more than happy to crawl in there lol. Thank god I fed her on the small side. Figure now she can get anything that I missed out on her own as I got the majority of it. Lesson learned, probably stressed her out more with all I did than it would have been to just slide a sheet of printer paper under her lol.

Anyways, here's a pic of her with the little F/T mouse. She looked so happy with it too lol.

Wow, that was definitely an eventful first feeding. Beautiful animal. Every time I think I'm all set I learn about a new snake like this and start thinking about how much more room I have for another! Good luck and enjoy!

Well, Gina ate her little hopper mouse last night and then had one heck of day today with me having to clean out a giant chew of Eco Earth in her lower lip lol. She is a resilient little bugger cause after all that, at lights out, she was out and cruising around. Guess its a good thing I just fed her a hopper to prime the pump but not to really fill her up. Here she is after lights out seeing what's happening. This little girl is awesome. Such a trooper lol.

Really sweet looking body on that girl. (That actually sounds wrong LOL!)

Anyhow, I've had that same EcoEarth issue. I put paper down to prevent it occasionally but somehow they find a way to drag the rat/quail or habit off the paper.

A little doesn't hurt them, but when it gets packed in there like you had to deal with, I agree it is best wash it out.

I have two Rio Bravo Pokis not far from me and if they ever breed I may join your club.

Love your boa and really like picture 3.

Well, tonight with the first night of hanging out with Gina a little and letting her explore the bed and me. Snapped some pics but couldn't really get anything super as I didn't want to stress Gina out by moving fast or moving a lot. Wanted her first time hanging out me to be a positive experience instead of the dat after I got her and I had to flush Eco earth out of her mouth after her hopper mouse lol.

Lol thanks man. I do like her a lot. I've always been a boa guy though but I love Caesar. He's my little spazz lol. I think Gina enjoyed her time out as now she is sitting in her warm hide with her head hanging out lol. She was inside the hide for past 4 days. Since I let her explore the bed and me, like I said, she is sitting with her head outside lol.

Guess I got a lucky deal too. Some guy on FB was looking for a nice boa and I referred him to Christopher Wolf who is who I got Gina from and when he talked to him, I guess his pure Rio Bravo Pokis are now $1000. Guess the prices went up when he sold the 3 he had in about an hour haha. But he is one of the few guys I guess who sells 100% pure Rio Bravo Pokis as I've seen his name mentioned a lot on the boards for people looking for Pokis. Honestly, I would do it all over for her. Gina is awesome looking to me and Chris is great to deal with. Wasn't about the money, he actually just wanted to shoot the bull about BCCs and wants me to send him pics of Gina as she gets older.

And lol, you know I would recommend a boa at the drop of a hat. But I would also recommend a retic lol. Those are my 2 favorites but I'm not sure I could handle 2 Caesars haha. Cleaning up after him is a full time job. The boas poop and piss about every 2-3 weeks while Caesar, I'm doing a sniff test in his cage daily lol. Also the boas are content to just sit on me in bed while I watch TV but Caesar.....yeah that ain't happening lol. He's like Dottie and if you don't keep an eye on them, they will wander off and find trouble somewhere haha.

Little Rango is still a bit nervous about being held. I don't think he was used to being held so he still kind of freaks out when you first pick him like he thinks he's gonna fall.

Alright, well I've decided to try another substrate!! Just ordered 4 blocks of the Plant It stuff. Gonna see how the little boas like it. Eco Earth works good but my god, Rosey shoves the stuff over the litter dam and it is a pain in the tracks lol. They need to just create a substrate that somehow has the best of all the substrates lol. Guess I'll let you all know how it compares to ReptiChips. I'll just have to pick the lesser of two evils, Rosey burying poops and pees or filling her door tracks lol. If she wasn't such a friendly and 'social' snake, I'd put her butt on newspaper lol ;)

Ok, Eco Earth officially SUCKS again!!! At least for my baby snakes. Today I lifted Gina's hide to check on her and she had a mouthful of Eco Earth again!!. I believe what happened was the Eco Earth over top of the flexwatt gets warm, then it releases steam which gets trapped inside the warm side hide and forms to a really think layer of condensation. Well I think Gina got some of that condensation on her mouth and then it picked up the EE while she was making her little nest. Then she tried to rub it off on the wet sides of the hide and picked up more and it just snowballed. Anyways, I had to clean her mouth out with a Q-tip and a spray bottle of water. Basically had to wash it out of her mouth. She wasn't too thrilled about it but she was happy to take her hopper mouse lol and look for seconds lol. I noticed the same with Rango but he just avoids the warm hide if it is filled with condensation.

So I ended up going back to aspen. I used it on all of my big snakes since they were babies and it worked well and they are all big fat slugs now lol. I'll probably end up using the Plant IT stuff on my big snakes and using aspen on Luna, Rango and Gina and probably Dottie as well as she doesn't need that high of humidity and she seemed to like aspen too.

So words of wisdom, if you use Eco Earth, make sure your hides have air holes in the top to vent out the steam/condensation. I'm using RBI hides btw.

Anyways, here's a couple older picks of her exploring at night.

Yeah, I used ReptiChips for awhile. Going with the Plant IT stuff which is the same stuff but half the price for my retic and big boas. The babies and BP are going to aspen as I've had years of luck with it.

I mix E/E with cypress. I also use repti chips and bark. All OK with me.
Gina is a favorite of mine here.

Thanks. She is so tolerant too. She sat there while I cleaned her mouth out. She did hiss once though when I lifted the blanket on the bed to check on her lol. She was all relaxed.

After I recovered her, she poked her snoot out and sat there while I cleaned and changed her substrate. Also did it for Rango too and put him on the other side of the bed under the blanket. Of course he decided to explore lol.

I raised al my snakes on aspen so figure I'll stick to it for the babies until they get bigger. Then I'll probably switch them to ReptiChips too. They love the aspen though. Rango spent the day burrowing all over haha. Then I fed him his mouse and he burrowed to the front of the cage and laid his head on the litter dam haha.

Poor Gina has been through a war here with eating EE and now getting a mouthful from the too wet of hide. She seems to like the aspen too. Made a little nest on the warm side with just her head at the door lol.

Glad to hear she ate after going through a mouthwash.

I use the cypress mulch now but I'm switching to Herptopia coco husk once the T10's are ready (assembled and airing out now, and waiting til Monday to talk with Ali about damaged top by FedEx..UGH).

Hopefully it works out, if not, I'll just switch back.

Stay away from it if its like Eco Earth!!! I hated Eco Earth years ago. Then I gave it a shot again and it was awesome....for like a week or so lol. Now it once again sucks!! :D On a side note, Gina and Rango LOVE aspen. Rango is making tunnels all over and Gina is exploring every inch of the cage looking at the aspen lol.

I think Gina needs to be upsized on her food. She was on medium mice when I got her but I fed her hoppers just to get he pumps primed. I think she wants more lol. And I think she is happy her mouth isn't filled with Eco Earth. She is playing all over in the aspen haha. Here's a couple pics of her looking at me when I was pointing the camera at her haha. She is such a trooper. You would think after being in a new house and then having your mouth washed out twice for being filled with Eco Earth would dampen your spirits. But nope, Gina is just the super curious, mellow little girl. She's totally a mini Rosey lol.

Sneaking in a couple more. Gina was feeling photogenic today lol. Her colors are coming in nice and that tail! Can't wait until she gets older. She's just the little 7 month old worm right now lol.

And as just a blast from the past pic, here is a pic of Gina being born. She's somewhere in that mass of goo and baby snakes lol.

    She's looking good.

Here is my friend's Poki from Gus. He has 2, and this is the female. It's a distant sister of you girl I'm sure.

    It is an old picture.

Nice. Oh i'm sure they are related. Gina's mom and dad are from Gus' 2006 litters.

Thanks man. Would get more but still letting her settle in but she seems to be doing good. She dropped her second deuce with me lol. That's why she was so active last night.

She looks really good. I wish my girl was a bit more active. She is friendly enough but she seems to spend most of her time in one of her hides. She does come out occasionally and chills in her place but she def isn't a climber. She is coming along well though. Great eater. Really good disposition. Just not so outgoing.

Thanks. Well Gina seems to get active mostly the night before dinner lol. She also gets active when I dig her out my under her aspen and play with her a little. Then when I put her back, she is still set on playing more lol. Funny though, she climbs the most out of any of the boas.

Also is your boa new? Usually after a few months, I notice all my snakes hide a lot less and spend most of the time half stretched out across the cage floor lol. I've only had Gina for just over 3 weeks so she still hides a little. But really not that much.

Yeah it's been a month and a half since I got her. I really hope she stays chill like she is. She seems to enjoy bring held. She is in relax mode unless it dinner time. She actually tagged me last week when I was feeding her. It's been years since I've been bitten. Lol
