Site expectations for posting new threads.

I have made a good few new threads for a new forum member.
Whats the expectation, am I doing too many.
I do a search to see if there is something similar one, if there is a similar one and its from an active user I would post in theirs as opposed to making a new one. If not or many many years ago i would make a new thread.
But if there is no similar thread, i make the new one.
Am I making to many. Whats the protocol?
My only motivation is to promote discussion, learn and not break rules.

There really isn't a protocol on how many threads you create as long as you don't violate the terms of service regarding content.

Some new members start threads, while others start none. There isn't a rule about it, nor any "expectations".

As for adding comments to existing threads, please consider how old the thread is as well as the relevance of your comments. Many don't like to see old threads revived, but in some cases (IMO) it makes sense to continue the original discussion.

Obviously it's awkward if your comments are intended to address a specific problem or situation by a member who hasn't posted here for years, but that doesn't mean that there aren't others who have a similar issue they'd like help with. A better way that you might consider (if the thread you're thinking of adding to is over a year old) is to just start a new thread, & if there's relevant content in the original thread that may facilitate the current discussion, just post a link to that old thread, & those who wish, can read further background. It's very hard to generalize about this, because new methods & information also turn up that may render the previous discussion obsolete, so use your best judgement. There are many kinds of topics here- it's not a "one-size-fits-all".

I would guess the staff make forums and subforums if they feel its needed. I am sure they will correct me if I am wrong.
But what were you looking for, there might be one close to that you can use. That's what I do.
