Rats - Colors and Coat Markings

A "Pink" eyed white's eyes are not really a pink color, more bright red. A Red eyed rat has dark red eyes, kinda maroon.

Also the rat in the picture at http://fancyrats.pbworks.com/w/page/8715181/Champagne (correct me if I'm wrong) has pink eyes.
Hard to tell from your pics but your suspected Champ look like it has pink eyes to me.

It may be that this rat is a very light beige or a poor eyed champagne. Rats can have many different shades of eyes. The only way to tell would be to take apart it's lineage.

Wish I could take apart his lineage. I probably wouldn't be so confused right about now. Maybe it is just my interpretation of what is pink and what is red. :confused:

Ok... from taking a closer look at the rat from the link and the pic you have here... mine has pink eyes. To me all 3 look red. So if that is pink, what does red or ruby look like? Because I think I have a ruby-eyed beige/blue(Russian Beige), but now I am not sure what she is... :rolleye2: oiy!

Both were from another breeder, who basically set up a grab-bag to choose from.

Don't feel bad, the pinks looking red threw me off at first too.

This particular rat was a black hooded that was diluted to beige by the RED gene. You can't really tell in the pic but the eyes are a Ruby dark maroon, not black.
Not all RED's have eyes this dark maroon, but most have noticeably darker red eyes than PEW's.

:) At first it is difficult but after a little bit of research and hands on work breeding your colony it becomes second nature. It takes time~!

That little one looks like one of my female breeders, eyes and all. She had a litter of 3 just a couple weeks ago... all the babies look like her but with different markings. OK, so are these RED's and PED's considered high white? I am having an issue figuring that gene out. Some things I get, but others are just confusing. Maybe I am just getting stuck on this because I think of an all white rat being associated with the pink eyes. Just my old brain not willing to absorb some things. LOL

We have merles, calico (tortishell), and are working on Black Eyed Whites right now. Here is a pic of a merle:

Where did you get calico? Do you have pics? So far all calico appearing rats in the pet trade and scientific literature, have turned out to be chimeras. The closest thing, mottled, is very rare. I know of only 4 people who ever had it, and of them, only 1 still does AFAIK.

Siamese are difficult to catch as babies because they do not look the same as adults. Their points develop with each molt.
