    Vanilla Bee gone....
Well I came home tonight and did my usual checks of the snakes, and opened my vanilla bees bin and I knew instantly something was wrong. Yep, he was dead, currently do not know why. Have him in the fridge and the wife will be taking him to the herp vet in the morning for a necropsy. First snake ive lost, it sucks. I had just recently found out some interesting stuff about him too how it was unknown if he is actually a vanilla or if something else was going on, long story.... I had paired him with about 3 of my females, so hopefully he didnt have anything bad, and hopefully he will father a clutch or two so I can see what was going on with his genes. Anyway, it sux.

Thanx, and yeah, as soon as I know something ill post it. I really hope it was just a freak thing and none of my other snakes will be affected. I have no idea what a necropsy will cost. What do they usually cost in the states? I figure it will be about the same just in euros not dollars...

Darn I'm so sad to hear that :( I'm interested, too, if the necropsy will reveal anything. Best of luck that it's an isolated incident. Sorry for your loss

So we got the results of the necropsy. The vet said he died of gout or due to his condition because of the gout, stress or some other minor infection could have been the trigger. The vet came to this determination due to the buildup of crystalized uric acid in his organs.

Wow, and he seemed fine up until he passed? It's scary to know that they can go so suddenly like that. I'm glad that it's an isolated incident, and not something that could have spread to your other snakes.

everything seemed fine to me. He didnt appear weak or dehydrated. He ate two weeks ago, he has been feeding on and off since its cooled off and weve been pairing him. He locked everytime. I am very thankful it was nothing contagious

In humans this is usually diet related. Where do you source your feeders from?

My feeders come from a local herp shop, he feeds all his snakes with the same feeders, we are working on breeding projects and everything together. It is really the only source for feeders in the whole city, so I do not believe it was that. I have only had the snake since august and the vet said she thought it developed before the snake was in our care.
