Mice

As a sort of "off-topic" question, I was wondering if anyone has any experience breeding feeder mice. If so, my main question is, is it worth the time and effort, or is it just cheaper to go to the pet store? Frankly, I think rodents of all variety are digusting little buggers and they freak me out (weird, coming from a reptile owner), but once i buy my baby king, i'm going to need a pretty steady supply of pinkies. So....any food breeders out there. what would u recommend?

As in baby "kingsnake"?? Kingsnakes are very easy to get on frozen, and IMO ordering frozen in quantity over the internet is much cheaper and easier than raising your own mice.

Personally, I wouldn't want to raise my own feeders for a single snake of any species. I just don't believe it would be cost effective.

Oh, believe me, I wouldn't be thinking about breeding if it was for only one snake. It'd be the 3rd. And odd as it sounds, frozen anything other than vegetables in my freezer is sort of a disconcerting thought (vegetarian...even though I sentence little things to their death every week). My thinking is in terms of ease, cost effectiveness and creepie factor. Dead rodents in my freezer definitely exceeds my creepie factor.

Well, we've got a couple breeding colonies going
but we've got a steady supply of mouths to feed, not to mention one of our local petstores buys our extras

There may be a bit of a problem if you don't want to freeze the baby mice; they grow at an astonishing rate! What I am saying is, say you have eight baby mice and they're all pinkies. You feed one to your snake, then wait a week til the next feeding... by then, the pinkies will be wuite a bit bigger than they were the week before. And in a few weeks their eyes will be opened and they'll have fur!
So if you wanted to make your own breeding operation practical, I guess you'd have to freeze them either way. So it might be a better idea to just buy frozen.
