When keeping crickets as feeders what have you found is the best substrate to keep them on?

None.
I just keep them in a bin with egg crates. Every few days I take everything out (except the crickets) and sweep all the crud up with a tiny wisk broom.
They are way too stinky and dirty for a substrate if you are just keeping them as feeders.
